 WHO AND THAT

"Who" is a form of "who", a pronoun which is often translated as "quién". "That" is a conjunction that can be translated as "que".

  • Who

This pronoun refers exclusively to people. It plays the role of subject or object in the sentence.

example

  • The book which I read last week is very interesting.
  • The cat, which is very friendly, is called Tom.
  • That

This pronoun is applied interchangeably both when referring to people and things. Therefore, you can use it to replace both who and which if the context allows it.
  1. The fish that I had for lunch yesterday made me feel bad.
  2. The movie that I saw this week, I really liked.
Who, That, Whom

  • Who (who, who, what): is used when we refer to someone. Lonely people, not things.

I am a person who teaches English.

  •  Whom (to whom, to whom, to whom): used only with people. It is more formal than who but we use it less.

The boy that was at the party is whom I met last week.

The guy who was at the party is who I met last week.

  • That (can replace who and which): used interchangeably with people and things. When in doubt always use that. Let's see it with the previous examples:

    UNIT 3
    INVENTIONS AND DISCOVERIES

As time goes by, we have always sought to facilitate the activities we carry out every day, forcing humanity to invent many things to have greater comfort, it may be in order to transport ourselves, communicate, as we see some great inventions that were made before. and later in humanity as was the car, the small plane. An invention also emerged that facilitated our way of communicating regardless of distance, such as the telephone

    DISCOVERIES

Unlike inventions, discoveries already exist without the intervention of human beings, only their existence was not known to humanity.

     EXAMPLE: the discovery of America
